Have you ever been camping?

Mention the word camping and I'm immediately transported back in time about 50 years when as a kid my friends and I used to camp. The camp site was not in any national park it was about 100 yards from the house and still it was a big big adventure. The fact that it was always cold, the tent leaked whenever it rained didn't seem to dampen the excitement.

 The older boys would of course try their utmost to scare the living daylights out of us younger ones by telling ghost stories.

As we got older we camped closer to good fishing ponds because fishing for roach, perch, and other freshwater pond fish found in the British Isles became a passion especially for Malcolm Golden, my best friend, and myself. In fact fishing is still the national past-time in the UK with more information published about fishing than anything else.

This was the way to learn about the value of good camping equipment! And dare I say it, as you get older, you appreciate good quality all the more! Camping is all about being outdoors, breathing fresh air and getting back to basics. Cooking on gas stoves, sleeping in tents and sitting on camp chairs around a roaring campfire whilst roasting marshmallows are memories that every child should have. The right camp site makes it easier.

Funny that I remember bent pots, bad gas stoves and uncomfortable sleeping! Perhaps as a kid equipment was not as advanced as it is today, and perhaps we were just used to sleeping under the stars with a tree root for lumbar support. But today camping is about having all of the good with less of the bad! Camping is a relatively inexpensive way of having a holiday, right in a natural environment. It's a way of interacting with nature in a far more intimate environment than is possible on any other type of holiday short of Survivor on TV. And campers speak a universal language - right around the world, campers know what camping is all about in a way that non-campers simply cannot comprehend!

But let's face it - the more fun you have camping the more you will enjoy it. and half the fun, for me anyway, is having the right equipment! And at my age a good nights sleep is worth the investment in its weight in gold! Add to it a well cooked meal and a comfy warm tent and well, you have as close to a heaven on earth experience as you could wish for!
